Set Up for Success Program

The Set Up for Success Program is an occupational therapy intervention designed to support children and young people aged 4–18 years to develop greater participation, regulation and independence through the co-design of their home environment and daily routines.

This individualised program is designed for children in Out of Home Care, foster or kinship placements, where changes in caregivers, expectations or living environments can impact a child’s sense of predictability and confidence in daily life. The Set Up for Success Program actively involves the child in making decisions about their space and routines, helping to build ownership, engagement and understanding of what supports them to function best. This systems-aware approach supports children to experience greater predictability and clearer participation pathways in everyday life.

Balance to Bloom occupational therapists deliver this program across the Perth region, with limited availability across Western Australia.

What the Program Includes

Delivered in collaboration with care teams, occupational therapists work to explore practical environmental and routine supports such as:

  • sensory bedroom set up and calming space creation

  • visual routines and daily schedule supports

  • executive functioning supports to assist task completion

  • environmental strategies to support emotional regulation

  • decluttering, zoning and organisation of personal spaces

  • incorporating the child’s preferences, strengths and interests

Written Recommendations and Practical Supports

Following the program, families and care teams receive a written summary outlining:

  • environmental recommendations

  • routine and strategy suggestions

  • visual supports developed during sessions

  • considerations for ongoing skill development

These recommendations aim to support consistency across caregivers and environments.
